The potential origins of chordal(harmonic) dissonance related with evolutionary psychology(conditioning)

October 28, 2020

People are widely exposed to music in modern society, with songs and tunes of diverse styles and genres. A common aspect that can be found in music, though, is the concept of consonance and dissonance, a categorization of groups of intervals that sound musically harmonious or disagreeable together. When only considering the simultaneous play of intervals, without regarding melodic context, rhythm, or other notes that can be played before or after the particular set of intervals, defining consonance and dissonance is considered universal. This study aims to explain the psychological reasoning behind their universal preference.
